The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.
National Nursing Organizations II01:30

National Nursing Organizations II

Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...
Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse I01:30

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse I

Accountability in nursing is a fundamental principle that underscores the obligation of nurses to take responsibility for their actions and answer for any errors or omissions in patient care. This principle is grounded in the professional, legal, and ethical frameworks that shape nursing practice. For instance, nurses must adhere to all relevant laws, regulations, and practice standards, including guidelines set forth by nursing boards and professional bodies, to ensure their actions comply...

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse II

Professional accountability in nursing is a multifaceted concept that encompasses professional ethics, legal standards, and employment expectations. This framework ensures that nurses maintain and elevate the quality of care while upholding the values of their profession. It compels them to treat patients, families, and colleagues with respect, compassion, and integrity.
For example, a nurse demonstrating respect and compassion might listen attentively to a patient's concerns, provide comfort...
Introduction to Learning01:18

Introduction to Learning

Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge or skills through practice or experience, leading to long-lasting behavioral changes. This acquisition occurs through interaction with the environment and requires practice or experience. For instance, mastering a skill such as surfing requires considerable practice and experience, highlighting the essential role of repeated interactions with the environment in learning.
In contrast to learned behaviors, unlearned behaviors such as crying, sexual...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data from the...

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacy Education
  • Student Learning Strategies
  • Licensure Examination Preparation

Background:

  • Declining pass rates on the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) are a growing concern.
  • Pharmacy programs utilize readiness exams to guide student self-preparation for licensure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between clusters of self-regulated learning behaviors and performance on a NAPLEX readiness examination.
  • To assess the impact of these behaviors during Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective observational cohort study surveyed final-year PharmD students.
  • Self-regulated learning behaviors were assessed using a modified Self-Regulation Strategy Inventory-Self-Report.
  • Associations between behavioral clusters and readiness exam performance were analyzed using correlation and regression models.

Main Results:

  • Higher pre-APPE GPA correlated with better readiness exam performance.
  • Individual self-regulated learning behaviors like planning and persistence were associated with higher scores.
  • Integrated clusters of self-regulated learning behaviors demonstrated stronger associations with exam success than individual strategies.

Conclusions:

  • Clusters of self-regulated learning behaviors are more predictive of NAPLEX readiness exam success than isolated study strategies.
  • Academic coaching should prioritize teaching bundled self-regulation techniques to enhance licensure readiness.
