Unsupported transuranic σ-hydrocarbyl complexes of Np4+ are unknown due to the redox instability of Np4+-C bonds. Here we report the first Np4+ σ-benzyl complex, [NpBn(NP*)3] (NP* = [NP(1,2-bis-tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt2)]1-; Bn = CH2(C6H5)), providing a rare example of a stable Np4+-C σ-bond and new insight into transuranic organometallic chemistry.
