Mobile Simulation: Expanding Forensic Nursing Education to Underserved Regions

Forensic nursing bridges the health care and legal systems by delivering person-centered, trauma-informed care to survivors of violence while collecting samples that may be used as evidence. Maintaining competence requires ongoing evaluation of clinical and communication skills, especially for those in underserved regions, who face barriers such as isolation, limited resources, and education gaps.

A forensic mobile simulation unit was developed to deliver onsite experiential education. Three simulation training sessions were conducted across rural regions, with 2- to 3-day programs that included hands-on patient encounters with simulated patients.

The mobile unit supports forensic nurses through tailored simulations covering the health care response to sexual assault, forensic photography, trauma-informed communication, and nonfatal strangulation. Nurses showed improvements in knowledge retention, communication skills, and confidence.

Mobile simulation offers a convenient, scalable approach supporting forensic nurses and providing continuing education. This mobile simulation-based education bridges geographic and educational gaps while improving patient safety and clinical proficiency.
