Cholecystitis01:20

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...

Summary

Economic analyses of biliary tract cancers (BTCs) show conventional chemotherapy is often more cost-effective than newer therapies. High prices for advanced treatments limit their cost-effectiveness, highlighting the need for value assessment in BTC care.

Area of Science:

  • Health Economics
  • Oncology
  • Health Technology Assessment

Background:

  • Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are aggressive malignancies with increasing incidence and poor prognosis.
  • Advances in BTC treatment increase economic pressure on healthcare systems.
  • Economic evidence is crucial for BTC resource allocation and health technology assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize the economic evidence on biliary tract cancers (BTCs).
  • To assess the cost-effectiveness and resource utilization of various BTC treatment strategies.
  • To inform health policy and resource allocation decisions for BTC management.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of economic studies on BTC (2010-2025) in major databases.
  • Inclusion of cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, cost-benefit, cost-of-illness, and resource-use analyses.
  • Assessment of reporting completeness (CHEERS 2022) and methodological credibility (Drummond framework).

Main Results:

  • Conventional chemotherapy generally showed more favorable economic outcomes than newer systemic therapies.
  • First-line immunotherapy and targeted therapies often exceeded willingness-to-pay thresholds at current prices.
  • Real-world data indicated high resource use and costs, particularly for hospitalizations and later treatment lines.
  • Limited evidence on screening and prevention, though ultrasound surveillance may be cost-effective in specific endemic regions.

Conclusions:

  • Affordability and jurisdiction-specific value assessment are key for BTC policy.
  • Current pricing of novel BTC therapies challenges their cost-effectiveness.
  • Further research is needed on prevention, early detection, and care-pathway interventions for BTC.
