Elite triathletes show increased GLP-1 and GIP levels during training, with correlations between these incretins and NF-κB. These markers may indicate metabolic adaptation to intense exercise in athletes.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Sports Science
- Exercise Physiology
Background:
- Professional triathlon training is a demanding physiological pursuit.
- Understanding metabolic adaptations in elite athletes is crucial for performance.
- Serum concentrations of GLP-1, GIP, testosterone, and NF-κB were investigated in relation to training load.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare serum concentrations of GLP-1, GIP, testosterone, and NF-κB between elite triathletes during preparatory and competitive periods and untrained individuals.
- To assess potential correlations between these biomarkers and training phases.
Main Methods:
- A comparative study involving 37 elite male triathletes (ages 25-50) and 20 healthy untrained males.
- Serum samples were analyzed using the ELISA method to determine concentrations of testosterone, GLP-1, GIP, and NF-κB.
- Data were compared between training periods (preparatory vs. competitive) and against a control group.
Main Results:
- GLP-1 concentrations increased significantly from the preparatory to the competitive training phase.
- GIP serum concentrations were higher in trained triathletes compared to the untrained control group.
- No significant differences in testosterone or NF-κB were found between groups, but a positive correlation was observed between NF-κB and GLP-1/GIP.
Conclusions:
- Incretins (GLP-1, GIP) and NF-κB may serve as potential biomarkers for metabolic adaptation to exercise in athletes.
- These findings suggest a role for monitoring these markers in optimizing individual training regimens.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the complex relationships between these biomarkers and athletic performance.
