Soldier health and operational ergonomic risk in Malaysian military bridge installation

BackgroundCompact-Bailey-Bridge 100 installation in military engineering demands high-force exertions and sustained hazardous postures, creating ergonomic risks for personnel.ObjectiveThis study quantifies task-specific ergonomic exposures, documents work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) prevalence, and identifies vulnerability determinants among Royal Engineer Regiment (RER) servicemen (N = 331).MethodsErgonomic risk was assessed using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) during critical tasks. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) were evaluated using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS to examine correlations and socio-occupational associations.ResultsREBA identified unacceptable risks during base plate assembly (score 11) and lifting sections weighing more than 20 kg (score 10). NMQ revealed high WMSD prevalence (lifetime: 38%; 1-month: 30.3%), with lower back and knees most affected. Strong correlations linked REBA with wrist/hand and lower back discomfort, while knee strain was poorly predicted. Significant determinants included age, marital status, rank, and service duration.ConclusionSystemic safety failures require urgent engineering, administrative, and PPE interventions. Leadership must prioritize resources to mitigate this preventable burden. Future research should employ longitudinal intervention studies and biomechanical monitoring.
