Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy01:24

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) are grounded in the belief that our thoughts profoundly influence our emotions and actions. Advocates of CBT emphasize three core assumptions: first, that cognitions are identifiable and measurable; second, that they are central to psychological functioning; and third, that irrational or maladaptive beliefs can be replaced with rational and adaptive ones. This transformative approach to therapy has paved the way for specific models such as Albert Ellis's...

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) experience higher rates of mental health issues compared to the general population.
  • Implementing accessible psychological services is crucial for this vulnerable demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the successful implementation of psychological services tailored for patients with MCI and mild AD/ADRD within a large US public health-care system.
  • To assess the feasibility and initial efficacy of these services.

Main Methods:

  • A clinic champion was identified to facilitate referrals within a Memory Assessment Clinic.
  • Patients received short-term, evidence-based psychotherapy (CBT or ACT), with initial sessions in-person and follow-ups via telehealth or in-person.
  • Eligibility guidelines were established for patient selection.

Main Results:

  • Patients experienced an average reduction of 2.2 points in depression symptoms.
  • An average reduction of 2 points in anxiety symptoms was observed.
  • Implementation barriers and facilitators were documented.

Conclusions:

  • The implementation of evidence-based psychotherapy clinics within geriatric settings is feasible.
  • Patients with MCI and mild AD/ADRD demonstrate a significant interest in and benefit from psychotherapy services.
  • Further research is recommended to explore the impact of CBT and ACT for anxiety and depression in neurocognitive disorders.
