Abstract:
We report an oxidative skeletal editing strategy that converts antiaromatic expanded porphyrins into structurally and electronically distinct porphyrinoids. Ni0-mediated cyclization of β,β'-dibromotetrapyrrin metal complexes furnishes fourfold N-confused (NC) [32]octaphyrin bis-metal complexes that exhibit global antiaromaticity. Subsequent site-selective oxidation at the inner α-positions triggers an unprecedented porphyrinoid metamorphosis, affording doubly linked 10-oxacorrole metal complex dimers via oxygen incorporation and skeletal reorganization. Notably, these products display dual electronic structures in which locally aromatic 18π 10-oxacorrole subunits are embedded within a globally antiaromatic 32π circuit, whereas diketo-octaphyrin metal complex products show globally aromatic 30π systems. This transformation demonstrates that oxidative functionalization of NC frameworks enables precise control over both molecular topology and π-electronic structure. These findings establish oxidative skeletal editing as a general strategy for inducing porphyrinoid metamorphosis and accessing previously unattainable aromaticity patterns.

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can be...

Oxidation of Phenols to Quinones
o-hydroxy phenols are oxidized to o-quinones and p-hydroxy phenols to p-quinones. Such redox reactions involve the transfer of two electrons and two protons. The reversible redox property is crucial in...
Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human eye.
