Residency Program Solutions at 50: A History of Promoting Excellence in Family Medicine

Over the past 50 years, Residency Program Solutions (RPS) has been a key participant in supporting family medicine residency training programs and program leadership development. RPS is a peer consultation service offered by the American Academy of Family Physicians to help both new and established family medicine residency programs fulfill related Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education program requirements for residency training. Shepherded by an RPS Criteria for Excellence manual, which is constantly evolving and updated regularly, RPS consultants utilize various in-person and virtual consultation formats in response to the needs of their clients. This article summarizes the contributions of RPS over the last five decades and highlights the continued evolution of consultation and other educational offerings that help family medicine residency programs strive for excellence.
