Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) prevalence decreased in U.S. hospitals from 2015 to 2023, with 1 in 38 patients affected. Despite this decline, the overall burden of HAIs remains substantial.

Background:

  • Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) pose a significant public health challenge in U.S. hospitals.
  • Previous surveys indicated a prevalence of 1 in 31 patients with HAIs in 2015.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the changes in HAI prevalence in U.S. hospitals since 2015.
  • To estimate the national burden of HAIs in 2023.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized established methods from the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) network.
  • Conducted a survey in up to 25 hospitals per EIP site between May and September 2023.
  • Reviewed medical records of randomly selected patients to identify HAIs using National Healthcare Safety Network definitions.

Main Results:

  • In 2023, 2.6% of patients (1 in 38) had HAIs, a decrease from 3.2% (1 in 31) in 2015.
  • Approximately 60% of HAIs were not associated with devices or procedures.
