Neonatal therapy is crucial for optimizing outcomes in high-risk infants.
Contemporary practice patterns and evolving roles of therapists in the NICU require description.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe current neonatal therapy practices within the NICU.
To identify trends in therapist roles, interventions, and care philosophies.

Main Methods:

A 2024 survey of occupational therapists (OTs), physical therapists (PTs), and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) practicing in NICUs within the last 5 years.
Data collected from 1,095 clinicians across 728 hospitals regarding staffing, assessments, interventions, and care models.

Main Results:

Most NICUs have OTs, PTs, and SLPs, with a high percentage of Certified Neonatal Therapists (CNTs).
Therapists utilize standardized neurobehavioral and feeding assessments, treat complex infants, and increasingly adopt specialized programs like SENSE and NIDCAP.
Significant shifts include increased evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary collaboration, and structured team approaches.

Conclusions:

Neonatal therapy is becoming more specialized and integrated into NICU care.
Therapists play a vital role in identifying developmental risks and implementing targeted interventions for improved infant outcomes.
