Implementing the Cannabis Use and Behaviors Assessment Tool (CUBAT) With Staff Education in Perioperative Services: A

Purpose:
To evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and early uptake of the consensus-based Cannabis Use and Behaviors Assessment Tool (CUBAT) paired with a brief staff education intervention in perioperative services.
Design:
Single-site pilot study using a feasibility-focused, one-group pretest-posttest design.
Methods:
Perioperative clinicians and staff were offered brief education focused on perioperative cannabis implications and standardized assessment using CUBAT. Outcomes included staff knowledge (9-item quiz), preoperative cannabis screening practices (survey), perceived barriers, and self-reported frequency of CUBAT use. Descriptive analyses compared baseline and follow-up responses.
Findings:
Fifteen staff members attended training. Follow-up survey response was limited (n=5). Mean knowledge scores improved from 55.8% to 66%. Self-reported CUBAT use increased from 0% at baseline to 40% at follow-up. Time constraints and uncertainty about where/how to document findings were the most commonly reported barriers.
Conclusions:
A brief educational intervention and standardized cannabis assessment approach were feasible and perceived as valuable, with signals of knowledge improvement and limited early adoption in a small, high-attrition sample. Sustainability requires workflow hardwiring (e.g, electronic health record (EHR) integration), role clarity, and brief reinforcement strategies.
