Full-Color Multifocal Plane Display Based on a Dielectric Stereoscopic Metasurface

The escalating demand for augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) is generating significant development opportunities for full-color stereoscopic display technology. Metasurfaces, engineered from micro- and nanostructures, present a compelling platform for this purpose owing to their superior control over light and highly integrated structural design. This work demonstrates a full-color stereoscopic display based on a TiO2 dielectric metasurface. The device operates by leveraging the distinct dispersion properties of wavelength-specific nanoantennas to facilitate simultaneous and independent display in three distinct wavelength channels. Through a deliberate reorganization of spatial diffraction orders, we have engineered a multifocal display capable of projecting full-color images across up to eight independent planes, all within a 38° field of view for high-fidelity spatial color reproduction. This metasurface-based platform, which delivers high-quality imaging for diverse content, shows considerable promise for future integration into compact wearable display systems.
