Insights
Antidepressant trials for young people often focus on average effects. However, clinicians need to understand individual treatment responses for personalized pediatric mental healthcare.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Traditional antidepressant trials in youth assess average efficacy against placebo.
- Clinicians face the challenge of treating diverse individuals, not "average" patients.
- Patient and family concerns center on individual treatment effectiveness and expected outcomes.
Abstract:
For decades, antidepressant trials in children and adolescents have been designed to answer the question: does the medication, on average, work better than placebo? As clinicians, however, we confront a different challenge. We do not treat "average" patients. We treat individual children and adolescents who differ in their symptoms, developmental stage, family environment, treatment history, and ultimately their response to treatment. Families rarely ask whether an antidepressant works on average. Rather, they ask whether it is likely to help their own child and what they should expect during the course of treatment.

Theoretical Approaches to Psychological Disorder
Biological approach
The biological approach posits that internal, organic factors are the primary causes of such disorders. This perspective emphasizes brain structure and function, genetic predispositions, and neurotransmitter imbalances. For example, schizophrenia has been associated with both genetic...
