Abstract:
The present study aimed to explore the breastfeeding processes and experiences of mothers of multiples (twins, triplets, or more). Conducted at a university hospital in Turkey, the research utilized a phenomenological qualitative design. The participant group comprised 12 mothers aged 25 to 38 years, representing diverse socioeconomic backgrounds; all had delivered twins or triplets within the past year. Maximum variation sampling was used to ensure a broad range of experiences, and all mothers brought their infants to the Newborn Outpatient Clinic. In-depth, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted between January and June 2017, with data audio-recorded and analyzed using content analysis. The findings were organized into 4 main themes: breastfeeding management, mothers' willingness to breastfeed, daily-life impacts, and mothers' suggestions. Overall, mothers reported limited or no support during the breastfeeding period, frequent concerns about inadequate milk supply, and a heightened focus on nutrition and hydration to sustain breastfeeding. They highlighted the critical role of robust social support systems and the considerable effort required to maintain breastfeeding with multiples. Given these findings, it is essential that nurses and other healthcare professionals be aware of the unique needs and challenges faced by mothers of multiples. The study suggests that implementing targeted educational programs and establishing peer support groups could help address mothers' concerns about milk supply and provide much-needed emotional and practical support. Policy makers should consider integrating needs-based counseling services and accessible care models into standard practice to improve outcomes for this population.
