An earth-abundant heteroleptic copper(I) complex-based probe was effectively employed for the selective and sensitive detection of phosgene. Exposure to trace amounts of phosgene displayed significant enhancement of photoluminescence both in solution and the gas phase. Portable paper-based test strips were fabricated for practical phosgene vapor detection.
