Abstract:
This study reports the first magnetic stirring-driven solid-state synthesis of rotaxanes in a sealed glass tube, affording neutral donor-acceptor rotaxanes 4a/5a and 4b/5b in yields of 67% and 75%, respectively─comparable to ball milling results. In rotaxane 4b, Zn2+, Eu3+, and Lu3+ cations drive directional translocation of macrocycle 1b from the naphthalene diimide (NDI) to the central pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide station; subsequent addition of tren sequesters these metal ions, reverting macrocycle 1b to the NDI station.
