Delayed Newborn Bathing: Exploring Social Media Trends, Cultural Perspectives, and Dermatologic Implications

Background:
Delayed bathing of newborns has gained popularity, particularly on social media platforms, with influencers promoting delays from 24 h to several weeks. While delayed bathing is endorsed by the World Health Organization for at least 24 h after birth, claims of extended delays are largely anecdotal.
Objective:
To review current evidence on the effects of delayed newborn bathing on skin barrier function and infection risk, and the influence of social media and culture.
Methods:
Narrative review of peer-reviewed studies on neonatal skin barrier metrics, microbial colonization, and infection outcomes in relation to bathing timing, supplemented by an assessment of prevailing claims on TikTok and cultural practices surrounding newborn bathing.
Results:
In healthy term infants, delayed bathing up to 24 h preserves vernix caseosa, improves skin hydration, and is associated with higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding, improved thermoregulation, and reduced hypoglycemia. Studies show transient increases in transepidermal water loss after bathing but no lasting disruption of skin maturation. No evidence links delayed bathing with increased rates of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, bullous impetigo, or neonatal sepsis. Infection risk is more strongly determined by prematurity, maternal colonization status, and NICU exposures.
Conclusions:
Delayed bathing for healthy term newborns for at least 24 h is evidence-based, safe, and beneficial for skin barrier development, with no demonstrated increase in infection risk. Data on delays beyond 24 h remain limited. Healthcare providers should proactively counsel families, address online misinformation, and guide them toward evidence-based practices.
