Abstract:
Bed bugs are blood-sucking ectoparasites of humans and animals worldwide. However, limited data exist for Indonesia. This study aimed to identify bed bug species and its associated bacteria in four cities in Indonesia: Bogor Regency, East Jakarta, Cianjur and Bandung. Samples were collected only from houses with the owners' permission. Morphological identification only characterised one bed bug species, Cimex hemipterus. One house in Cianjur had the highest count of bed bugs, significantly reducing the homeowner's quality of life. Both non-pathogenic and suspected pathogenic bacteria, including Bradyrhizobium sp., Afipia sp. and Pseudomonas sp., were detected.
Insights
This study identified Cimex hemipterus bed bugs in Indonesia, finding associated bacteria and significant quality of life impacts in one Cianjur home. Further research is needed for effective bed bug control strategies.
Area of Science:
- Medical Entomology
- Microbiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Bed bugs (Cimex hemipterus) are global ectoparasites affecting human and animal health.
- Limited data exists on bed bug prevalence and associated bacteria in Indonesia.
- Understanding local bed bug populations is crucial for public health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify bed bug species infesting homes in four Indonesian cities.
- To detect bacteria associated with bed bug infestations.
- To assess the impact of bed bugs on homeowners' quality of life.
Main Methods:
- Morphological identification of bed bug species from collected samples.
- Bacterial detection using molecular methods.
- Quality of life assessment through homeowner interviews.
Main Results:
- Cimex hemipterus was the sole identified bed bug species.
- A house in Cianjur exhibited the highest bed bug count, severely impacting the homeowner's quality of life.
- Both non-pathogenic and potentially pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Bradyrhizobium sp., Afipia sp., Pseudomonas sp.) were detected.
Conclusions:
- Cimex hemipterus infestations pose a significant public health concern in Indonesia.
- The presence of associated bacteria warrants further investigation into potential pathogenicity.
- Addressing bed bug infestations is essential for improving the quality of life in affected communities.
