This review found many different tools used to measure knowledge of HIV prevention methods like PrEP and PEP. However, these tools vary widely and often lack proper development and validation, highlighting a need for better assessment methods.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Infectious Disease Prevention
- Health Sciences Research
Background:
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) are crucial for HIV prevention.
- Assessing public knowledge of PrEP and PEP is vital for effective implementation.
- A comprehensive understanding of how this knowledge is measured globally is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically map and characterize the instruments used to assess knowledge of PrEP and/or PEP.
- To identify the scope and nature of existing measurement tools for PrEP and PEP knowledge.
Main Methods:
- A scoping review following JBI guidelines.
- Systematic search of multiple databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, VHL) and grey literature.
- Inclusion of original studies assessing PrEP/PEP knowledge, with independent review and data extraction.
Main Results:
- 49 studies were included from 1,922 records, predominantly cross-sectional and published 2020-2024.
- Instruments primarily assessed PEP (55.1%) or PrEP (40.8%) knowledge, mainly in healthcare professionals/students (71.4%).
- Significant variability existed in instrument design, scoring, and limited reporting of development and psychometric properties.
Conclusions:
- Substantial heterogeneity exists in instruments measuring PrEP and PEP knowledge.
- Gaps in reporting instrument development and validation necessitate the creation of more robust and standardized assessment tools.
- Improved measurement tools are essential for accurately evaluating population knowledge of these key HIV prevention strategies.
