Effectiveness of integrated interdisciplinary postgraduate workshops with competency-based assessment: A mixed method

Background:
An interdisciplinary curriculum refers to curriculum organisation that cuts across subject matter lines to focus upon comprehensive life problems or broad-based areas of study that brings together the various segments of the curriculum into meaningful association. The current study is intended to improve the knowledge and application of subject across the departments to build a strong foundation for future clinicians and enhance interdepartmental coordination.
Objective:
The study was done to compare the Integrated post-session (OSCE) Objective structured clinical examination/(OSPE) Objective structured Practical examination scores with the traditional scores of two groups followed by a Focus Group Discussion.
Method:
Forty two first year postgraduate residents from Surgery, pathology and anatomy departments in the year 2025 included a pre-test on knowledge and skill of the participants followed by an integrated session on the topic decided based on Postgraduate competency, randomization of the inclusion group into an intervention group having demonstrate, observe, assist and perform session followed by post-test and Focus group Discussion whose participants were recruited by purposive sampling.
Conclusion:
Beneficial impact of the intervention on knowledge and skill of the participants post intervention was noted with statistically significant mean score difference of 9.79 ± 1.87 and 12.38 ± 3.03. Focus Group Discussion analysis yielded 13 deductive codes 7 sub-codes and 3 themes being i) increase competency, ii) content integration, and iii) positive personal and social impact. Integrated interdisciplinary post graduate workshop with competency-based assessment will not only enhance Participant satisfaction with skill enhancement, but also promote Interdisciplinary collaboration.
