Background:
Timely, patient-centred care is central to the Urgent Suspected Cancer Pathway (USCP). Nurse-led straight-to-test (STT) models aim to streamline investigations while providing support and clear communication.
Aims:
To evaluate patient and carer experiences of a nurse-led gastrointestinal (GI) STT telephone clinic across lower and upper GI pathways.
Methods:
A cross-sectional survey was sent via text to patients, family members and carers following STT telephone consultations. The 13-item survey explored referral communication, appointment processes, nurse interaction, understanding of investigations and overall satisfaction. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, and free-text responses underwent thematic analysis.
Findings:
118 respondents (lower GI n=78, upper GI n=40) participated. Most reported clear referral communication (71%), timely contact (95%), dignity and respect (99%) and understanding next steps (97%). Overall satisfaction was high, with 81% reporting high satisfaction (scores 9-10/10). Themes highlighted professionalism, empathy, efficiency and areas for improved clarity and reassurance.
Conclusions:
Nurse-led GI STT clinics deliver high patient satisfaction levels and supportive care. Enhancing communication and information provision through patient resources may further reduce anxiety and improve understanding during the diagnostic phase.
