Evaluation of PV module encapsulant by infrared absorbance band shape

Abstract:
Lamination of the photovoltaic (PV) modules modifies the properties of the encapsulating polymers. Infrared spectroscopy is frequently used to identify the polymer changes aiming to control the quality of the modules. Here, a possibility to uncover new specific information about the encapsulants and the relationship with the gel content by the spectroscopy tests was proposed. The approach was based on the analysis of the absorbance band shape in near and mid-infrared regions. The changes in the 720 cm-1 band demonstrated crystallization of the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyolefin elastomer (POE) films that correlated with the gel content after the thermal lamination. The vibrations of the oxygen containing functional groups were related to the 1737 cm-1 band shoulder that monotonically decreased with an increase in the gel content in EVA films. The reflection experiments proved highly sensitive to the changes in the EVA and POE properties that can be used to evaluate the gel content by analysis of in the near infrared absorption bands at about 5800 cm-1 and 4350 cm-1.
