Gum Arabic-Stabilized 8‑Prenylchrysin Nanoemulsion with Enhanced Bioaccessibility and Anti-Inflammatory Effect

Abstract:
Previously, we developed 8-prenylchrysin (PC), a prenylated chrysin derivative with potent anti-inflammatory activity. In the present study, a gum arabic-stabilized nanoemulsion (NE) was developed to enhance the gastrointestinal bioaccessibility (BA) and delivery performance of PC. The formulated PC-encapsulated emulsion systems (PC-ESs) showed a homogeneous droplet size distribution of 38.5 ± 0.05 nm, an encapsulation efficiency reaching 99.4 ± 0.06%, and favorable colloidal stability over 30 days of storage. Simulated gastrointestinal digestion revealed that PC-ES substantially increased the transfer of PC into the micellar fraction compared with unformulated PC, indicating improved BA. Furthermore, PC-ES retained its anti-inflammatory effect by attenuating lipopolysaccharide-stimulated inflammatory responses in murine RAW264.7 macrophages. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the GA-based NE provides an effective approach for enhancing the gastrointestinal BA and practical utilization of PC.
