Electroreductive dearomatization has emerged as a powerful strategy for converting readily available arenes and heteroarenes into three-dimensional, sp3-rich architectures using electrons as traceless reductants. Compared with classical dissolving-metal reductions, electrochemical approaches offer improved safety, tunability, chemoselectivity and functional-group tolerance. This review summarizes advances from 2019 to 2026, focusing on Birch-type electroreduction, electrochemical hydrogenation/deuteration and dearomative electroreductive coupling. Key developments, including rapid alternating polarity electrolysis, electrocatalytic hydride/deuteride transfer, radical-anion chemistry, Lewis acid activation and tandem C-C bond formation, are discussed. Remaining challenges and opportunities in asymmetric reactions, site selectivity, paired electrolysis and flow scale-up are also highlighted.

Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution: Overview
Thermal Electrocyclic Reactions: Stereochemistry
Selection Rules: Thermal Activation
Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.

Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution: Addition–Elimination (SNAr)
The reaction begins with an attack of the nucleophile on the carbon that holds the leaving group. This results in the delocalization of the π electrons over the ring carbons. The resonance interaction between the...
