[The neologism "primarylogist": A lexicographical proposal]

We advocate for the neologism "primarylogist," a term coined to designate professionals and researchers in the field of primary care (PC). The proposal seeks to fill a lexicographical gap and confer a distinct identity upon a specialty with its own characteristics, analogous to other medical specialties whose names end in "-logist." The authors justify the need for the term based on the substantial differences between hospital medicine and primary care. To reinforce this distinction, the text analyzes a crucial technical aspect: the performance of diagnostic tests. Citing various studies, it argues that, contrary to conventional belief, the sensitivity and specificity of a test are dependent on the prevalence of the disease. These parameters difer significantly between the hospital and PC settings due to the unlike "patient profiles." Therefore, the semiological code and the applicability of diagnostic tools differ in each context. Although the term has not achieved widespread use since its proposal, we reaffirm its semantic relevance.
