The Experience of "Feeling Cold" in Patients Undergoing In-Centre Haemodialysis

Background:
The symptom of "feeling cold" in patients with kidney failure is underexplored in the literature and absent from standard symptom assessment tools. Virginia Henderson highlighted temperature regulation as a fundamental need, emphasising the importance of addressing this symptom in renal care. It has been observed that patients in in-centre haemodialysis are relying on the usage of heating pads and blankets all year around.
Objective:
To examine how patients undergoing haemodialysis experience the symptom of "feeling cold".
Design:
A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach.
Participants:
Twenty-six adult patients with kidney failure receiving in-centre haemodialysis participated.
Approach:
Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, with an interview guide based on Van Manen's four lifeworld existentials. Data were analysed using Malterud's systematic text condensation.
Findings:
Participants reported diverse experiences of "feeling cold," often describing it negatively. This symptom significantly affected their psychological, physical, and social well-being. Some participants also noted experiences of "feeling hot," indicating a complex interplay of temperature sensitivity.
Conclusions:
"Feeling cold" emerged as a meaningful and distressing experience among patients with kidney failure. These findings enhance the understanding of patients' lived experiences and highlight the need for further investigation into the prevalence and severity of this phenomenon, including among patients with kidney failure not on dialysis. Addressing temperature sensitivity might improve symptom assessment and overall patient care in renal healthcare settings.
