Evaluation of Microbiota Metabolites on Nutritional Profile: A Prospective Regional Study

Background:
The present study sought to ascertain the manner in which clinical variables, diverse demographic characteristics, and differing dietary patterns might affect alterations to microbiota metabolite profiles in healthy individuals.
Objective:
Within the specified scope, the aforementioned variables were examined separately according to gender and age groups.
Methods:
The present study comprised a total of 529 healthy individuals aged between 18 and 65 years. The investigation revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between male and female participants with regard to fecal SCFAs and serum LPB levels. The levels of fecal SCFA and serum LPB exhibited variation among the study's age groups.
Results:
The subsequent Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between fecal acetic acid levels and BMI, age, fat percentage, Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), and LPB levels. A significant negative correlation was identified between fecal butyric acid levels and BMI, age, fat percentage, and HOMA-IR values. A significant positive correlation was identified between serum LPB levels and BMI values. A positive correlation was identified between serum LPB levels and the consumption of red meat, pastries, chicken meat, and coffee. A positive relationship was identified between the sum of short-chain fatty acids and the consumption of dried legumes.
Conclusion:
The detrimental impact of refined carbohydrates and a low fibre content on gut microbiota metabolites is well-documented. The development and implementation of more effective interventions to increase consumption of diets low in refined carbohydrates and high in fibre within our society is a public health priority.
