Radiation safety attitude among anesthesiologists in radiation fields

Objective:
This study aimed to assess anesthetists' knowledge of radiation safety and the frequency with which protective measures are used across different operating theaters.
Methods:
A total of 110 participants, in a single educational institution, returned completed questionnaires. Their knowledge levels and attitudes were analyzed and correlated with gender, years of experience, and area of assignment.
Results:
No significant association was found between gender and knowledge level. However, a strong positive correlation (P < .001) was observed between years of experience and total knowledge score. Regarding attitudes, only 24 participants (21.8%) reported using dosimetry, and all of them monitored and followed up on their readings. Concerning apron use, 69 anesthesia physicians (62.7%) reported wearing aprons; however, only 11 (15.9%) routinely inspected them before use. Among the 41 physicians who did not use aprons, only 4 cited unavailability, while ~53.6% reported discomfort as the primary reason. The use of thyroid shields and protective eyewear was reported by only 18.2% and 11.8% of participants, respectively.
Conclusion:
Owing to the growing number of therapeutic surgical procedures using radiation imaging, regular training in radiation protection is essential. Additionally, operating theaters where radiological procedures are performed should be treated as radiological environments and equipped with appropriate protective measures to ensure the safety of all personnel.
