Individuals with high experiential avoidance (EA) showed greater improvements in positive and negative affect when using ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) after psychiatric hospitalization. This suggests EMIs may benefit those with high EA.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Digital Health
Background:
- Experiential avoidance (EA) is linked to emotional disorders and suicide risk.
- EA may impact how individuals respond to real-time interventions.
- Ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) deliver coping skills during daily life.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if baseline EA moderated affect changes during a 4-week Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based EMI.
- To assess the impact of EMIs on momentary affect in adults post-psychiatric hospitalization.
Main Methods:
- 76 adults hospitalized for emotional difficulties/suicide risk participated.
- Participants received CBT skills training and a 28-day smartphone-based EMI.
- Experiential Avoidance Questionnaire and affect assessments were used.
Main Results:
- High EA was associated with greater increases in positive affect and decreases in negative affect after skill use.
- Effects on negative affect were significant across all EA levels.
- Effects on positive affect were significant at average and high EA levels.
Conclusions:
- Preliminary evidence suggests CBT-based EMIs may improve affect in individuals with high EA post-hospitalization.
- Digital interventions targeting avoidance may benefit high-risk populations.
- Further research is needed to confirm these affective benefits.
