Background:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a global public health threat contributing to over 1.27 million deaths in 2019. The knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) on AMR among medical students have a direct impact on the future of combating this global problem. Despite the presence of country-specific data on KAP among medical students, there still lacks a consolidated study synthesising this information in Africa. This study aims to assess the KAP on AMR among medical students in Africa.
Methods:
This will be a systematic review of studies assessing the KAP on AMR among medical students in Africa. Relevant studies will be identified using PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Google Scholar and African Journals Online (AJOL) accessed via HINARI Access to Research for Development and Innovation programme or direct Open Access for PubMed, AJOL and Google Scholar. All searches will be conducted for studies published from 2015 to 2025. Both quantitative and qualitative studies will be included. A narrative synthesis will be conducted as well as a meta-analysis if data permitting the analysis will be obtained. Risk of bias will be assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist for cross-sectional studies.
Ethics And Dissemination:
This review involves synthesising data from existing studies; therefore, no ethical approval will be required. Our study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at local and international conferences.
Prospero Registration Number:
This study has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), registration number CRD420251207301.
Insights
This systematic review synthesizes knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among African medical students. Findings will inform strategies to combat AMR, a major global health challenge.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Public Health
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health issue, causing over 1.27 million deaths in 2019.
- Medical students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding AMR are crucial for future AMR containment efforts.
- A consolidated synthesis of AMR KAP among medical students in Africa is currently lacking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and synthesize existing data on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among medical students across Africa.
- To identify gaps and trends in AMR-related KAP within this demographic to inform targeted interventions.
Main Methods:
- A systematic review methodology will be employed, searching databases like PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and AJOL.
- Studies published between 2015 and 2025, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative research, will be included.
- Data will be analyzed using narrative synthesis, with potential for meta-analysis if data permits. Risk of bias will be assessed using the CASP checklist.
Main Results:
- This section is to be populated upon completion of the review and data analysis.
- Anticipated results will detail the current state of AMR knowledge, attitudes, and practices among African medical students.
- The findings will highlight regional variations and common themes in AMR KAP.
Conclusions:
- This systematic review will provide a comprehensive overview of AMR KAP among African medical students.
- The synthesized findings are expected to guide the development of educational strategies and interventions to improve AMR stewardship.
- Ultimately, this research aims to contribute to the global effort to combat antimicrobial resistance.
