Misuse of noncontrolled prescription medications (NCPMs) is often overlooked with the emphasis on opioids and stimulants. We provide a definition of misuse and describe common categories of NCPMs commonly misused, and through case-based examples we discuss select medications, motives and context for misuse and provide some basic information on clinical management. We also discuss the importance of flexibility in working with these patients and in prescribing or deprescribing NCPMs.
