Hematological Inflammation Indices Are Associated With Active Uveitis in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Objectives:
This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between active uveitis and hematological inflammation indices, specifically the HALP and CALLY scores, in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
Methods:
This retrospective cross-sectional study included 140 patients with AS. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of uveitis. Laboratory data obtained during active uveitis episodes were used for the uveitis group, while routine follow-up data were used for the control group. Hematological inflammation indices were calculated and appropriate statistical analyses were performed.
Results:
In patients with uveitis, NLR, PLR, SII, and AISI values were found to be significantly higher, while HALP and CALLY scores were significantly lower (all remaining significant after Benjamini-Hochberg FDR correction). SIRI and MLR did not retain significance after FDR correction. In the ROC analysis, the HALP and CALLY indices demonstrated moderate discriminatory performance.
Conclusion:
Although hematological inflammation indices are associated with the presence of uveitis, they have limited value for diagnostic purposes alone. In clinical practice, however, they may serve as complementary markers for assessing inflammatory burden in patients with AS and may provide supportive information when evaluating active uveitis.
