Abstract:
BackgroundA scarcity of literature exists on the association between the school nurse (SN) work environment and school nurse job outcomes. This could be because the work environment of school nurses has yet to be expounded.MethodsA scoping review was conducted to identify modifiable characteristics of the SN's work environment and evaluate existing literature on the relationship between SNs' work environment and their job outcomes.ResultsSchool nurses describe the following elements of their work environment as salient to their job outcomes: workload; role clarity; empowerment; autonomy; communication; trust; support; recognition and appreciation. There is a paucity of quantitative literature that evaluates the relationship between these elements and SN job outcomes.ConclusionGenerating evidence on the effects of the work environment on SNs and their students is a first step towards building solutions that can enhance the work of SNs.
