Parents' Experiences and Perceived Benefits of a Parent Program in Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes

Abstract:
Parents' experiences with a group-based parent program in pediatric type 1 diabetes were explored. A mixed-methods, realist-inspired program evaluation was conducted. One hundred thirteen of 211 parents of children (4-19 years) attending the "LosVast"/"Loose-Tight" program across 12 diabetes centers completed satisfaction surveys; interview participants (k = 28 families/n = 38 parents) were purposively sampled. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively; qualitative data were coded thematically/narratively. Program satisfaction (m = 5.4; SD = 1.2) and recommendation (m = 5.5; SD = 1.2) were rated on 1 to 7 Likert-type-scales. Parents valued peer support beyond content. Most reported increased awareness of parenting; behavioral changes (e.g., more supportive communication) were most evident among families with moderate pre-existing difficulties. For those, program content resonated most; parents with minimal/substantial difficulties desired a broader focus. Group-related benefits were strongest in groups matched by child age and/or diabetes stage, while also including more experienced families. "LosVast" can foster reflection and enhance collaborative diabetes-related parenting, primarily through guided peer exchange, with contextual factors shaping experiences.
