The Therapeutic Use of Natural Products in Myopia Prevention: Recent Applications

Abstract:
Myopia is one of the most common vision-impairing eye diseases worldwide. In recent years, its incidence has exhibited a growing trend toward both higher prevalence and earlier age of onset, underscoring the urgent need to investigate its pathogenesis and develop effective preventive strategies. Currently, behavioral intervention, optical correction, and pharmacological therapies constitute the three primary strategies for myopia control. Although these approaches have demonstrated measurable efficacy, each is limited by inherent drawbacks. Natural products, characterized by diverse chemical structures, widespread availability, potent biological activities, and relatively low toxicity, offer significant advantages in myopia prevention and have increasingly emerged as a focal point of research. This review will discuss the latest discoveries and applications of natural products in myopia prevention, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation for the development of novel intervention strategies.
