[Between File and Medical Record: A Case Study from the Stasi Prison Hospital in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen]

The targeted use of medication in Stasi remand detention centers prior to interrogations has so far been insufficiently empirically documented. However, the files of the pre-trial detainee "Clausmann" provide, for the first time, evidence that psychotropic substances may have been deliberately used prior to interrogations and that their use was not fully disclosed to the courts. Against the backdrop of the institutional function of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen prison hospital within the GDR's security apparatus, this article examines, by way of example, the extent to which medication may have been integrated into the secret police practices of the Ministry for State Security and its significance for the historical evaluation of pre-trial detention practices and for future research questions.
