2D Transition Metal Carbo-Chalcogenides: An Emerging Family of Layered Materials

Abstract:
Transition metal carbo-chalcogenides (TMCCs) represent an emerging class of 2D materials that combine the structural and functional features of 2D transition-metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) and transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). TMCCs exhibit remarkable potential in functional applications such as energy storage and catalysis and are expected to become a new research focus within the family of 2D materials. At present, research on TMCCs is still in its infancy. Their compositional diversity remains to be further expanded, and their functional properties have yet to be fully explored. The relatively high synthesis difficulty is one of the key factors limiting the development of this class of materials. This work provides a systematic overview of the development of TMCC materials, summarizing recent advances in their structural characteristics, synthesis methods, property investigations, and potential applications. In the future, breakthroughs in the fabrication of high-quality, large-area samples are expected to offer new opportunities for the further development of TMCCs.
