Solvent-selective photoinduced transformations of pyridine-BCl3 Lewis complexes

Abstract:
Despite the fundamental importance of Lewis acid-base adducts in catalysis, their photochemical properties have remained widely unexplored so far. Herein, we report combined NMR spectroscopic and computational studies to elucidate photoinduced transformations of pyridine-BCl3 Lewis adducts, revealing photoinduced hydrolysis versus ring contraction and cyclopentene ammonium ion formation in protic and aprotic media contrary to the literature.
