Beyond Weight: Analyzing the Relationship Between Weight of Tissue Removal and Cup Size Change in Breast Reduction

Introduction:
Reduction mammoplasty is performed to alleviate physical discomfort and enhance breast aesthetics. However, the relationship between the amount of tissue removed and the resulting cup size change remains unclear due to variations in breast composition, density, and patient anatomy. This study investigates how the weight of excised breast tissue correlates with changes in cup size.
Methodology:
A retrospective study was conducted at our institute from September 2021 to December 2024, including 184 female patients with ptotic breasts (Regnault classification). Exclusion criteria included a history of breast lumps or cancer due to potential impact on breast volume and surgical outcomes. Preoperative assessments involved body mass index, breast measurements, and symptomatic history. All patients underwent vertical short scar breast reduction. The weight of excised tissue was recorded intraoperatively, and postoperative cup size was assessed at multiple follow-ups up to 3 months.
Results:
The age of patients ranged from 30 to 55 years, with a mean age of 46.5 ± 5.3 years. Breast tissue removal ranged from 200 g to 800 g, with corresponding reductions between 1 and 4.5 cup sizes. However, no direct correlation between resected tissue weight and final cup size was observed. Factors such as breast density, composition, and anatomical variations influenced outcomes.
Conclusions:
A holistic approach incorporating imaging, anthropometric measurements, and patient-centered planning is essential for optimal surgical outcomes.
