Field and Stream Recovery: Patient-Reported Return to Hunting and Fishing After Total Knee Arthroplasty

Background:
Patient motivation for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) often includes returning to activities limited by pain. While studies have examined TKA and return to sports such as golf, tennis, and skiing, data on outdoor activities like hunting and fishing are limited. This study evaluated patient ability to resume hunting and fishing following TKA.
Methods:
Patients who underwent TKA at a rural Appalachian academic medical center between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2024, were invited to complete an anonymous online survey. Collected data included demographics, types and frequency of hunting and fishing, level of return, and perceived impact of TKA. Of 513 respondents (response rate = 14.9%), most were men (57%), married (71%), and aged 65 to 74 years (44%).
Results:
Of patients who hunted in the past five years, 75% resumed hunting (mean return, 6.4 months). Among fishers, 76% resumed (mean return, 5.9 months). Across both cohorts, 93% of patients would recommend TKA to others wishing to return to these activities.
Conclusions:
This study evaluating return to hunting and fishing following TKA indicates that most respondents resumed these activities within six months. The high rates of return and willingness to recommend TKA underscore its functional benefits for outdoor recreational pursuits. These findings can support preoperative counseling and help shape patient expectations. Future research should assess return-to-activity outcomes after other forms of arthroplasty and identify factors associated with successful resumption of recreational activities.
