Recent updates and perspectives in "Onco-hypertension"

Advances in treatments for cancer patients have markedly improved their long-term survival, leading to a growing population of cancer survivors. Consequently, hypertension and cardiovascular disease development in this population during short-term and long-term follow-up have emerged as a significant public health concern. In recent years, numerous studies have been published in the emerging field of "Onco-Hypertension," which comprehensively investigates the relationship between hypertension and cancer. In this review, we provide an overview of (1) the association between hypertension and cancer incidence and recurrence, (2) the development of hypertension in childhood cancer survivors and the clinical implications of its screening, (3) the relationship between hypertension, blood pressure variability, and cardiovascular complications in patients receiving anticancer therapies, (4) whether specific antihypertensive agents are beneficial for managing anticancer therapy-induced blood pressure elevation and cardiotoxicity, and (5) whether treatment-induced hypertension can serve as a prognostic marker in patients with cancer, primarily focusing on articles published in Hypertension Research in 2025. We also discuss key issues that warrant further debate in this field, as well as directions for future research and important considerations for the design and conduct of future studies.
