Summary
Testicular cancer (TC) is a leading cancer in young adults. This study analyzed 318 TC cases, finding germ cell tumors most common and the majority diagnosed at stage I, with no significant age-prognosis link.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Epidemiology
- Cancer Research
Background:
- Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common cancer among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15-39.
- Despite its prevalence, TC is one of the most curable cancers.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the epidemiology, histological classification, and stage at diagnosis of testicular cancer.
- To evaluate prognosis, stage I risk factors, and the relationship between prognosis and age.
- To provide data from the Center of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy at Latakia University Hospital.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 318 testicular cancer patients.
- Data collected from the Center of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy at Latakia University Hospital (2007-2025).
Main Results:
- Median age at diagnosis was 32 years; germ cell tumors were most prevalent.
- Non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (51.6%) were slightly more common than seminomatous (45.9%).
- The majority of patients were diagnosed at stage I, with variations between seminoma and non-seminoma types.
Conclusions:
- Findings align with global testicular cancer (TC) proportions.
- Further research is needed in Syria and the Middle East due to limited existing studies.
