Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells in inflammatory bowel disease: Crosstalk with innate and adaptive immunity

Abstract:
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by chronic, relapsing, inflammatory, and immune-mediated responses in the intestinal tract. IBD includes the two well-defined subsets Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) are non-hematopoietic progenitor cells known for their regenerative and immunomodulatory capabilities. They have gained prominence as therapeutic agents for immune-mediated disorders, such as IBD. This review summarizes and categorizes the therapeutic significance of MSCs for IBD in the context of their interactions with various innate and adaptive immune cells, including neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells (DC), natural killer (NK) cells, B lymphocytes, and T lymphocytes.
