Direct effect of nitrofurantoin on dental pulp stem cell viability and odontoblastic differentiation potential

Aims:
This study aimed to compare the effects of different concentrations of nitrofurantoin and triple antibiotic paste (TAP) on the viability and odontoblastic differentiation potential of human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs).
Materials And Methods:
DPSCs were cultured and exposed to serial dilutions of nitrofurantoin and TAP. Cell viability was measured using the MTT assay at 72 h, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was assessed at 7 days to evaluate differentiation potential.
Statistical Analysis Used:
One-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test and independent t-tests; significance at P < 0.05.
Results:
Nitrofurantoin demonstrated significantly superior preservation of DPSC viability compared with TAP across all tested concentrations. ALP activity showed a concentration-dependent increase in both the groups.
Conclusion:
Nitrofurantoin exhibits superior biocompatibility with DPSCs while maintaining differentiation capacity, making it a promising alternative intracanal medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures.
