Background:
Environmental contamination in children's hospitals contributes to the infection risk because microbes survive on surfaces and are easily transferred via staff/patients/visitors' hands to sick children via contaminated hands.
Methods:
The published English literature was searched on environmental disinfection strategies to keep infant and pediatric patients safe from healthcare pathogens.
Results:
This paper presents evidenced-based disinfection practices, using safe and effective disinfectants, to reduce the risk to children from toys, games, stuffed animals, and environmental surfaces.
Conclusions:
Maintaining a hygienic environment significantly reduces the risk of transmission of pathogens to pediatric patients and improves patient safety.

Cleaning
The cleaning process usually involves using water with detergents or enzymatic cleaner and removing foreign material from objects and surfaces, including organic material such as body fluids or inorganic material like soil. Cleaning is performed before high-level disinfection and sterilization because foreign materials on the cover of the devices interfere with process...
