Rare Anatomical Variant of Spinal Accessory Nerve Passing Through the Fenestration of Internal Jugular Vein-A Case
1Department of Surgical Oncology, Thoothukudi Government Medical College, Tamil Nadu, India.
Abstract:
Neck dissection (ND) is an integral part of multimodal management of head and neck cancer (HNC). In the neck, four patterns of anatomical relationship between spinal accessory nerve (SAN) and internal jugular vein (IJV) were described in literature. A rare pattern of SAN traversing through a fenestration in the upper part of IJV is described in this case report. The objective is to familiarise surgeons about the various anatomical relations of SAN and IJV to avoid iatrogenic injury during surgery.

Veins of Thorax
The azygos vein, positioned just right of the midline and anterior to the vertebral column, begins at the junction of the right ascending lumbar and subcostal veins, terminating in the superior vena cava. This vein drains blood from the right side of the thoracic wall, thoracic viscera, and posterior abdominal wall.
