Abstract:
This article aims to identify and synthesize scientific evidence about the experiences of racism among older Black individuals. This is a scoping review conducted according to the methodological framework proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Searches were conducted in the following databases: Lilacs, Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. For gray literature, the following sources were used: Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, CAPES Theses and Dissertations Catalog, Cybertesis, and NDLTD. The search yielded 1778 references, and the final sample consisted of 13 studies. Experiences of racism in healthcare were identified in all studies and were related to the biopsychosocial dimension of health. The results suggest that among the various manifestations of racism, its experiences are most directly linked to biopsychosocial health. The study presented analytical categories for each of the experiences of racism, all of which unanimously pointed to health inequities within the biopsychosocial dimension. However, further research is necessary to promote the inclusion, understanding, and investigation of the experiences of racism among older Black individuals.
