Undetectable Mycobacterium leprae complex in European Pallas's squirrels

Pallas's squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) introduced to Europe do not carry leprosy. This study found no evidence of Mycobacterium leprae complex DNA in tested squirrels, suggesting zoonotic leprosy is limited to British red squirrels.
