Emerging applications of systemic therapy with older people

Family and systemic psychotherapy has been developing over seven decades but was slow to extend into the field of later life. The convergence of changing demography and evolving networks of systemic psychotherapists is blending with a cultural shift towards recognising older people's needs and influence as this population grows. However, isolated pockets of systemic practice lack coordination, collaboration and shared learning and risk missing opportunities to establish these interventions' rightful contribution to society, services and older people.

We draw on expertise from clinicians working in the field to explore the current provision and models of service delivery of systemic therapy with older people in the United Kingdom. The applications of systemic therapy are discussed, highlighting established and emerging areas.

A variety of service models are being offered across the United Kingdom with older people and their families. We summarise theories and techniques found to be particularly valuable. Accumulating evidence shows the breadth and complexity of issues that can be worked with and benefit from systemic interventions.

Systemic therapy with older people is a dynamic and developing area. Many clinicians work in relative isolation with limited resources, so networks to connect and share ideas, as well as record and research their activities, are useful to support continued evolution. There is a golden opportunity for the field to move beyond the niche.
